The unspoken rules at University

Study hard, Party harder

Here’s some helpful tips to help you through your year that no one will ever tell you.

Pre-drinks: Back at home, this was never a thing. You would get ready, go out and get smashed. But now you’re a poor student, it’s a night out essential and can sometimes be better than the night out itself. Pre-drinks also involved A LOT of drinking games; the ever-telling ‘never have I ever’ is where you learn that your housemate had sex with someone in a fast food joint and ‘The ring of Fire’ where you end up drinking shot upon shot of absinthe (really would not recommend). You will live for the pre-drinks – however your hangover the next day tells a different story.

Don’t buy text books straight away: This is definitely one for the freshers. You may think you’re smart getting all your books in early but out of those 15 you've brought, you’ll probably use a grand total of two. The library is a god send so use that as much as possible! Think of the jagerbombs you’ll be missing out on if you get that ‘important’ text book and then realise you've been using it more as a coaster than a research method.

You never sit at the front of the lecture theatre: Ok, this does vary through the year. As fresher’s, you may want to make an impression and sit at the front but as the year progresses (and you begin to experience nights out in the week) you slowly shuffle to the back. The only ones that sit at the front are either late and have nowhere else to sit or the ones that you wonder ‘how the hell did you get on this course?’

Once in your stay here at University, you will do the walk of shame: It doesn’t even have to be post-coitus related; for the commuters out there, this will happen quite a lot. The amount of times you’ll get asked to go out after your last lecture & realise you have no fresh clothes for the morning after is ridiculous. A top tip to avoid this is to always keep a spare set of clothes at one of your best friend’s house. Also, if you do happen to do the walk of shame – walking through the campus at 10am is not a good idea. People will stare and snigger. Just no.

Trent on Tour: The stories

The original story can be found on The University Paper Website

As the saying goes – what happens on tour, stays on tour.

That is, of course, until something ridiculous or hilarious happens and then the whole of the society – if not the entire university –  knows you as the guy who had an embarrassing mishap with an inanimate object.

With many societies flying across Europe – ranging from our dancers to the archery society –there is always an unruly story to be told, with a few students being more than happy to open up about their tour experiences.

This year, the Trent army haven’t failed to amuse us with their witty tour stories; punching of fresher’s,  public posting of genitals and drunk chanting about Wayne Rooney. We’ve heard it all.

From the simplistic shaving of ‘NTU’ into the back of your hair or, with even more dedication, a whole N Number being tattooed on your foot.

To the dangerous, one girl suffered with such a bad allergic reaction to a henna tattoo on her face that she was rushed to hospital.

Before even arriving at the hotel, a sports society member was kicked off the tour bus for being sick everywhere and yet managed to beat the whole bus to the hotel.

For one unlucky student, it was the sheer reality that a hockey stick was forced so far up his backside that it left him hospitalised with five stitches.  Definitely not the wisest of moves.

As mentioned by comedian Russell Howard, ‘I accidentally fell on it’ is not a believable explanation.

We all hope it was either a dare or you were entirely intoxicated.

One student was so drunk, he asked for his taxi driver to take him to Clifton and the driver continued to drive around the strip for half an hour.

After a while, the student realised he was getting nowhere and jumped to the conclusion that he was being kidnapped – which led to him throwing money at the driver and jumping out of the moving car.

Key Pieces for Summer!

Original article can be read on Page 8 at the University paper - http://publ.com/9TulFh

The thought of summer may seem a lifetime away, but it’s never too early to begin stocking your wardrobe with the latest summer trends. After the Spring/Summer 2013 collections were revealed in late 2012, there was a lot of buzz created about some of the key trends displayed. Here are my top five favourite trends and how you can incorporate it in your wardrobe.

graphic

Graphic Content

This style is definatly not for the faint-hearted! These outrageous, bold prints are really a head turner. These prints vary from futuristic squares, continental patterns and the timeless leopard print. Being worn as an oversized top or dress, the trend can be easily worn with plain jeans or matching print items.

60s

Bringing back the sixties

The sixties are back! Which means your inner Twiggy can be born. The mini dresses, the black and white spots or strips combo, this is the ultimate chic look - this trend promises to be a hit on the high street, being incorporated by Topshop & the online giant ASOS. So grab your round sunglasses, prepare your beehive and put on your checked coats!

bold coloura

Florescent Bold colours

Wanting to make an impression this season and stand out for the crowd? Well, this may be the trend for you! Like the Graphic Content trend, this is not for the faint hearted minimalist. Bright pinks, yellows and greens are hot this season and can be easily worn with a bright pair of jeans, a dress or shoes to give you that ‘wow’ factor.

bomber

The Bomber Jacket

One of the key fashion items this season – the bomber jacket has had a fashion makeover, being fashioned in silk, leather and satin & defined with a mixture of prints and patterns. The jacket can be worn simply with jeans or to give an edge to your look with a leather skirt.

90s

90’s Nostalgia

And finally, we’re brought back to the nineties! The light washed jeans, the slogan jumpers and PVC hats give the trend a fun edge. The grudge look can be worn simply as a slogan jumper and shorts or, as Balmain styled, use a jumpsuit!
